Phuket (May 2010)

Day 1: Sala Phuket

Having lived in this part of the world for 7 years, we are slightly embarrassed to say that we have never once been to Phuket. Only an hour and a bit flight away from Singapore, Phuket is known for its tranquil resorts, 'exciting' nightlife and beautiful beaches.

The opportunity arose when Kevin's good friend Steve made his bi-annual visit out to Asia and decided to do a tour of the region - stopping by Phuket as part of his tour, so we set plans in motion and opted to spend a long weekend checking out a couple of places.

We arrived on a Friday evening and decided to stay at SALA Phuket, a 79-villa resort just 20-minutes away from the airport along Mao Khao beach. Rustic minimalism and well thought out rooms made this resort one of the more interesting places we have stayed at in recent years. The architects for the resort is Department of Architecture, a Bangkok based firm headed up by Amata Luphaiboon and Twitee Teparkum - well regarded architects who were also behind the Sun Systems HQ in Bangkok and the Zense Restaurant.
